The Internet Explorer (IE) is a web browser developed by Microsoft. Over the years, Microsoft released several versions of IE, each one featuring new functionalities and improved performance.

Here are some of the major versions of IE:

• IE 1: Released in 1995, this was the first version of Internet Explorer. It was a basic browser that allowed users to browse the web and view HTML pages.
• IE 2: Released in 1995, this version included support for SSL, cookies and various other features.
• IE 3: Launched in 1996, this version featured support for CSS and improved HTML compatibility. It also introduced a download manager and the ability to remember passwords.
• IE 4: Released in 1997, this version included support for ActiveX controls and Dynamic HTML (DHTML), which enabled web pages to be more interactive.
• IE 5: Launching in 1999, IE 5 brought more advanced features such as improved rendering engines for CSS and HTML, support for bi-directional text, XML, and other standards. This release also saw the introduction of Internet Explorer for Mac.
• IE 6: Released in 2001, IE 6 was widely adopted as the default browser on Windows XP. It included new features like pop-up blocking and improved privacy controls.
• IE 7: Launched in 2006 after a long gap with no major releases, this version introduced to-tabbed browsing, RSS feed support and better security features like phishing filters.
• IE 8: Released in 2009, IE 8 came with advanced features such as Accelerators, enhanced security backend, improved AJAX and CSS support, and many more.
• IE 9: Released in 2011, this version introduced a redesigned interface with support for HTML5 and CSS3. IE 9 had hardware acceleration for better performance and introduced features such as jump lists and site pinning.
• IE 10: Released in 2012, IE 10 featured better support for HTML5 and CSS3, improved JavaScript performance, and a metro-style interface on Windows 8. The browser also had a touch-friendly interface for tablet devices.
• IE 11: The final version of Internet Explorer was released in 2013 with Windows 8.1. It included better developer tools, improved support for web standards, faster page loading speeds and better security features.

Until the release of Microsoft Edge in 2015, Internet Explorer was Microsoft's default browser on Windows operating system. It played an essential role in shaping the web browser landscape by introducing new functionalities and setting standards that other browsers would adopt.
